Class Structure

Our school provides an inviting and inclusive atmosphere for everyone.  Whether you’re a sword or martial art enthusiast, someone interested in history, or a person eager to jump into a competitive tournament, CSS appeals to every interest.

Class begins with 10 minutes of warm-ups. Then, it transitions into 10 minutes of fundamentals development through the use of solo drills to improve the mechanics of footwork and blade-work. Following this, the next 40 minutes is devoted to the objective of the lesson that teaches an aspect of the science of defense through the medium of partnered drills. Finally, the last half hour is devoted to coached or free sparring.

Interested?

Feel free to participate or spectate. Your first fencing class is free of charge.  Tuition for regular students is $50 every four months (or $150 for the year) to be paid by the first practice week of each month.

If you decide to train, bring comfortable gym clothes and shoes to move around in. As for training weapons and gear, the school has loaner equipment for newcomers, with the expectation that regular students will bring their own.

Current Class:

Intermediate Longsword

October 27th - December 29th

This 10 week class will explore the numerous handworks (Handarbeit) in Joachim Meyer’s Longsword as presented in his 1570 manuscript “The Art of Combat”.  Students will build on the foundational knowledge acquired in our Beginner’s Longsword curriculum (PDFs for that class are available on the facebook page). Each class session will cover a small group of related handworks, allowing time for drilling and sparring.  Students who have not taken our Beginner’s course are still encouraged to come and participate to broaden their knowledge and skills with a longsword.

Next Class:

Meyer Rappier

January 19th - March 9th

This 8 week introductory course will cover the basics of German Rappier as depicted in Joachim Meyer’s 1570 manuscript “The Art of Combat”.  The course will revisit the distance/timing mechanics taught in Meyer’s Longsword before going on to new material for Rappier fencing.  No previous experience is required and students of all skill levels are encouraged to attend.
